I know, I know, putting on muscle mass (at least in the capacity I’m talking about) will probably slow me down as a triathlete. But as discussed in the video below, I
love testing my body in all aspects of fitness, not just swimming, biking, and running.
HOW TO PUT ON MUSCLE MASS
In a nutshell: to get big, you need to lift big things (barbells, kettlebells, etc.) and eat big (more calories than you burn). No one knows how to do this better than strength and conditioning master Dan John. In Dan John’s book Mass Made Simple he explains exactly how to put on some serious muscle mass simply. I was first inspired to read this book when I heard Dan John talk about this program on podcast for another triathlete. Unlike most bulking programs Dan explains a science behind what are known as complex exercises (going from one exercises to another without setting the weight down) and high-rep back squats. The combination of both complexes and high-rep back squats provide a killer workout that for lack of better term, hurts so good.
With respect to Dan John (whom I’ve talked to in emails and is a super nice guy), I won’t disclose his entire plan from Mass Made Simple, however in the following video you can see me doing the third workout in his plan.
Also, if you’re interested in building muscle mass while also maintaining triathlon fitness, you can grab my exact 6 week training plan HERE.
