If you've been following my Facebook page or have been training with me in the last few months, you know I'm a huge fan of the steel mace (also referred to as a mace bell). Put bluntly the steel mace is freaking awesome and if you're not training with one, you will not be able to defend yourself in a zombie attack...
Steel Mace Background
The steel mace is a completely functional piece of equipment that has been around far longer than a dumbbell or barbell in the strength world. In fact ancient Hindu warriors have used it for centuries to prepare for battle (that in itself makes it awesome). Additionally the old school wrestler known as "The Great Gama" trained with one in the early 1900's. Click HERE to see him with his mace and to read more about him.
Where To Get a Steel Mace
Previously fitness enthusiasts either made there own steel mace, or paid someone online a lot of money to get one made for them. However, the increasingly popular website Onnit has started producing them at a fairly affordable prices (see the clickable links below). Note: I would highly recommend going lighter than heavier with these, I'm a fairly fit dude and went with the 20lb steel mace but wish I would have gone with 15lb.

How To Train With a Steel Mace
Just like any piece of fitness equipment it’s what you do with it that makes you fit. The steel mace (similar to a kettlebell) requires a tremendous amount of balance to compensated for the weighted ball at the end. If any exercise feels too easy you can simply move your hands away from the weighted end to increase the difficult. Don't believe me? Go into your garage and pick up a piece of gardening equipment (shovel, rake, etc.), grab it by the non-weighted end and try to bicep curl it.... You will realize up I mean.
